Uli
$800
Inspired by the traditional Igbo art form of Uli, this painting becomes a silent dialogue between past and present. The figures, layered and entangled, wear these marks not as ornament, but as witness—evidence of ancestry, culture, and quiet resilience. Uli is traditionally ephemeral, drawn with fluid lines and earth pigments on the skin or walls, destined to fade. Yet in this work, I preserve its spirit within a contemporary form, letting each stroke echo the grace, discipline, and philosophy it carries. The wide, searching eyes of the figures speak of longing, remembrance, and the silent inheritance we all carry. Their bodies, bearing Uli-inspired patterns, remind us that identity is not fixed—it is drawn, erased, and drawn again. Through ULI, I explore the emotional weight of heritage—not just what is remembered, but how it lives on in flesh, form, and gesture.
