Q and A segment with Amos Osemwengie

Q1. Tell us about your artistic background and what initially drew you to become an artist.

My artistic background is deeply rooted in my childhood experiences. There were many layers to how this interest developed. I believe the initial spark ignited in my childhood home where I lived with my mum. An architect lived in our compound, and I often observed him drawing and working on his designs. I was fascinated by the precision of his lines and attention to detail. It seemed like perfection to my young eyes. Inspired by him, I began practicing drawing myself.

As I grew older, I encountered more people with similar interests who were more skilled than I was. This fueled my passion, and I continued to practice and explore various mediums while honing my skills over the years. My goal was to create the most beautiful art possible. I am deeply grateful for my supportive mother, who never hesitated to provide me with the materials I needed to nurture my craft.

While I never consciously planned to become an artist, I pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Biology at the University of Benin while simultaneously painting and taking on commissions. After graduating, I found myself naturally gravitating towards art and letting go of other pursuits. In 2020, I had my first group exhibition, marking the beginning of my professional artistic journey.

Q2. What artistic style and techniques do you use in creating your artwork?

I primarily paint with oils, employing a traditional, multi-layered, Post-Impressionist technique. I'm drawn to the interplay of time and light. By this, I mean I aim to capture my subjects not merely through a visual illusion of their appearance, but also by exploring how they interact with light.

This is a highly organic process, allowing for a degree of randomness or unpredictability in my work. The paintings I create are richly textured, as I strive to imbue them with life, vitality, and a genuine sense of depth.

Q3. Do you have any specific techniques or rituals that help you get into creativity?

Every painting begins with an idea. Sometimes, that idea comes to me fully formed and requires only minimal enhancement, but other times, I must search for it. I like to brainstorm and play with various compositions on my sketchpad, and ideas somehow find their way. I prefer to do my brainstorming first thing in the morning because that's when I feel most like a child; my mind is clear, unburdened by the previous day, and open to endless possibilities. I nurture each idea over time, often refining it with a mini painting, allowing me to fully envision the composition before committing to the larger canvas.

Q4. Are there any specific themes or subjects that you tend to gravitate towards?

I like to be very free and pure in my practice and approach to painting. But looking at my creations over the years, I find that I have a great affinity for the natural world. I like to see my paintings as a celebration of nature and a call to awaken us to our connection with the planet and our higher selves. I strip my work of inanimate and political themes, preferring to capture the things that have life in them, the things that have stood the test of time.

Q5. Do you have a favorite piece or project that you've worked on?

As an artist, I find that my favorite pieces are often the most recent ones I've created. However, if I had to highlight a standout piece from all my collections, I would choose 'Blossom to Life.' This work holds a special place in my heart because it represents a pivotal moment in my artistic journey, capturing a sense of growth and transformation that resonates deeply with me.

Q6. What makes it special to you, and what was the inspiration behind it?

"Blossom to Life" is incredibly special because it encapsulates a profound moment of personal and artistic fulfillment. Completing this piece filled me with a unique blend of excitement and elation, as it felt like the visual representation of what I've been striving to create throughout my artistic journey. The inspiration behind this work is rooted in my earlier piece, "Blossom to the Divine," where I aimed to blend the beauty of floral elements with the essence of humanity. During the creative process, the composition of "Blossom to Life" organically emerged, symbolizing growth, rebirth, and an awakening to one’s true potential. It’s a reflection of the fruitfulness that comes from embracing and understanding oneself fully.

Q7. What do you hope to convey through these artistic choices?

I hope that when people see my work, they recognize something that they are a part of. Through my artistic choices, I aim to inspire a greater awareness of our shared existence and our relationship with the environment. By awakening consciousness and celebrating the beauty in our surroundings. I hope to awaken consciousness through my paintings and to manifest more beauty into this realm.
